This is for you!
Discipleship should be the major goal of every Christian, in every church, in every place, in every age until Jesus returns! Don't believe me? Read Matthew 28:18-20.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
M atthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The command is clear: “make disciples.”
“Make” implies intentionality and process. Disciple-making doesn't happen automatically, just because a person becomes a Christian, regardless of his own participation or the role of other people. Discipleship is a deliberate process.
“Going” requires effort, choice and commitment – speaking with people you may or not know. “Baptizing” involves successful evangelizing with a call to commitment. Discipleship is a journey to sign up to.
“Teaching them to obey everything” entails establishing new believers and teaching obedience to his commands. This teaching involves rules to live by, right relationships with God and men, godliness and morality, being model citizens and having harmony at home – amongst a host of other thing about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit: doctrines like justification and sanctification and the eternal world. It includes training in Christian service and in witnessing.
All this comes under the umbrella of “being a following Jesus.” It’s what being a Christian is all about! So how are you doing? How is your church making disciples? Read on to learn more about what it means to be a disciple and how you can become a disciple-maker for Jesus.
