The Discovery Course
A ground-breaking course with an impressive record of leading non-believers to Christ
THE NEED FOR A NEW APPROACH IN EVANGELISM
In our increasing secular society Christians are finding it more difficult to get a hearing from the unconverted world. There are many reasons for this, but one major factor is that we have lost confidence in presenting the simple truths of the Gospel and, in many cases, have become ashamed of telling others we are believers. Christians are often afraid of sounding silly or being accused of ignoring the facts of science, not accepting contemporary morality or being irrelevant and antiquated relics from a bygone age.
Consequently, witnessing has become a very distasteful practice as we have all had experiences of ridicule or rejection. Non-Christians generally think that God, if there is one, must be very cruel or at least unconcerned and uninvolved. Christians, many believe, are deluded and misguided and must be very sad and boring people. This explains why Christians shy away from witnessing and why efforts to promote outreach are met with reluctance or avoidance. Who wants to proclaim a God seen to be cruel or hostile, or encourage others to join the saddest and most deluded people on earth? It's an impossible task. The stance of the world has effectively silenced the church.
THE CHURCH HAS BEEN TOO SILENT FOR TOO LONG
It is time for the Church in the West to go back to the pure message of the ‘Gospel.’ In one generation we have witnessed an enormous spiritual decline across the western world and the emergence of resistant and even hostile attitudes to the Christian faith. Yesterday’s evangelistic methods are unable to penetrate this new posture and many Christians are looking for an approach that is both Biblical and effective in our ‘post-Christian’ world. The Discovery Course is specifically designed to break through the modern mind-set.
It presents the timeless Gospel in a way that is attractive, compelling, intellectually convincing and relevant to people’s needs. It helps participants regain credibility in the Bible, restore confidence in the Christian message and understand the grace of God that is available through Christ in a way that is attractive and accessible. Initially used as an effective means of evangelism in a church plant in the south of England, it has been finely honed over the last twenty five years into a set of transferable teachings which can be easily used, with great success, by churches everywhere.
Definitive Discipleship can provide full Course manuals in English or Spanish, training materials for Co-ordinators (Course Leaders) and Facilitators (Small group discussion leaders), MP4 videos in either English or Spanish and a full set of Powerpoint slides for those who prefer to present the material themselves.
The Discovery Course has proven to be the most powerful evangelistic tool that that we have used in the last 25 years! It is held over 5 weeks in two-hour sessions. It is accessible, relevant, fascinating and highly persuasive, using dynamic presentations, engaging Powerpoints, discussion groups and brief homework assignments. The cumulative effect is unparalled when compared with other similar courses.
1. Why bother with the Bible?
There are three main reasons for us to take the Bible seriously:
1. The Bible answers the great questions of life 2. The Bible addresses the greatest difficulties in life 3. The Bible offers the greatest fulfilment in life.
2. Can we trust the Bible?
Can we know that the Bible really is God’s message to us?
This session presents the plain, unvarnished evidence - both from the Bible but also from secular sources
3. What's so special about Jesus?
Jesus is the central character of the Bible and Christianity is firmly built on Him.
This session considers the biblical facts, the historical evidence and concludes with a discussion of his amazing claims.
4. Why did Jesus have to die on a cross?
The Cross of Christ is the central event of both the Bible story and the Christian faith. What does the Cross mean? Why did Jesus have to die? What’s it got to do with me?

This section focuses on application. What does the gospel mean to us as individuals today? What does a person have to do the receive this eternal life - this special quality of life - from God.
